So I'm originally from Maine, but when I was 14 I moved to Rhinelander, Wisconsin. A town known for having the northern most Taco Bell in Wisconsin(probably not true) but it's also know for it's weird mascot, the Hodag. The story does back to the late 1800's or early 1900's and most people say it was invented by a guy to keep people off his property. He made a fake Hodag, out of 2x4s, bear pelts, and moose antlers, and took pictures of it, then told people this thing lived on his land. the the story change that they lived in Boom Lake, which Rhinlander is pretty much built around. At least that's my recollection of the story.
a but more info for any one interested

Yup that thing was my high school's team mascot. And now I'm wondering how the hell I lived in this town for 7 years and not once did I climb the statue.
So dis any one else have a really weird town mascot?
also what got me thinking about this was I found a 71 El Co for sale in Rhinelander, which i know live 2.5 hours north of, and I thought "If I bought that I'd have to get a little Hodag on the dashboard, or embroidered on the seat backs, to remind me of home.

My hometown mascot is a Devil. My home county has the most "churches" per square mile than anywhere in the U.S. My school was the outcast of the county.

I've been through Rhinelander so many times I can't count. Went to school in Houghton and drive to and from Wausau on about half of my trips there in the past 5 years. On that route of course is Watersmeet with the Nimrods which is historically cool but commonly hilarious. Up near Houghton I know Dollar Bay are the Bay's which I always thought was weird.
Where are you now?

That's pretty cool actually. The town I currently reside in, Howell, MI, has a history with the KKK. The Grand Dragon of Michigan (thats a cool title, isn't it...grand dragon...), lived in the town north of here (Cohoctah Twnshp). So when the KKK gathered, they stayed in Howell usually.
I mean, that's interesting (from a historical standpoint), but isn't very cool, cuz the KKK are jerks. I like your story better. You should get a shirt with the mascot in it, and totally wear it everywhere. Make sure you tell out-of-towners it's real!

My mom lives by this guy:
It's a giant duck with red reflector eyes and a gift shop in its belly, and people dress it up for Christmas. Also the locals keep trying to move it back and forth between two locations.
